Το Μαγικό 2004: Το Τέλος του Θριάμβου
Οι τελευταίες μέρες μιας χρυσής χρονιάς
Καλώς ήρθατε στο τελευταίο μέρος της σειράς newsletter για το μαγικό 2004, μια χρόνια που σημάδεψε την Ελλάδα και τη θυμόμαστε σαν μια από τις πιο λαμπερές και αισιόδοξες χρονιές, αλλά και σαν την αρχή του τέλους μια περιόδου γενικευμένης ευδαιμονίας.
Ξεκινήσαμε αυτό το newsletter series με σκοπό να ανακαλύψουμε τι συνέβαινε το μαγικό 2004 στην ελληνική κοινωνία περα από τους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες και όντως συναντήσαμε πολλά παράλληλα γεγονότα τα οποία δε γνωρίζαμε ή δεν θυμόμασταν (ελπιζούμε το ίδιο κι εσείς!).

Πάμε να δούμε όμως πώς έκλεισε η χρονιά και τι συνέβη τους τρεις τελευταίους μήνες του μαγικού 2004.
Το σινεμά επιστρέφει
Το φθινόπωρο φέρνει νέες ταινίες και σειρές, και η παραγωγή εκείνης της σεζόν ήταν μεγάλη.
Στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης του 2004, που διοργανώθηκε στις 19-28 Νοεμβρίου, μεταξύ άλλων προβλήθηκαν πολλές ελληνικές ταινίες που κάνουν ακόμα αίσθηση, όπως:
Νύφες (Παντελής Βούλγαρης)
Φτάσαμεε!... (Σταύρος Τσιώλης)
Hardcore (Ντένης Ηλιάδης)
Τεστοστερόνη (Γιώργος Πανουσόπουλος)
Αληθινή Ζωή (Πάνος Κούτρας)
Delivery (Νίκος Παναγιωτόπουλος)
Το ‘Delivery’ και η παρακμή που θα ερχόταν
H πιο ενδιαφέρουσα από τις παραπάνω ταινίες ήταν ίσως το Delivery του Νίκου Παναγιωτόπουλου. Η ταινία αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός νεαρού άνδρα, χωρίς ονόμα και χωρίς πλάνο, που φτάνει με το ΚΤΕΛ στην καρδιά μιας παρακμιακής Αθήνας για να γίνει ντελιβεράς και να βιώσει τις αντιθέσεις και τη μιζέρια της μεγαλούπουλης.
Την περίοδο της χρυσής διαφημιστικής εκστρατείας των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων του 2004, ο Παναγιωτόπουλος αποδομεί την Αθήνα και στρέφει το βλέμμα του στην αφιλόξενη πλευρά της πόλης, στα υποφωτισμένα σοκάκια, στα γκέτο του κέντρου, τα ναρκωτικά, τους άστεγους και τους μετανάστες, με έναν κάπως προφητικό τρόπο για το μέλλον που θα ερχόταν και για το πόσο συνήθεις θα γίνονταν αυτές οι εικόνες λίγα χρόνια μετά.

Το ελληνικό Sex and The City
Στην τηλεόραση, ο Νίκος Περάκης, γνωστός από τις δημοφιλείς ταινίες του “Λούφα και Παραλλαγή” και “BIOS + πολιτεία”, επιστρέφει με τη δεύτερη σεζόν του “Σχεδόν Ποτέ” (της ελληνικής εκδοχή του Sex and The City). Τέσσερα κορίτσια (Ναταλία Μίγδου, Μαίρη Ακριβοπούλου, Βίκυ Παπαδοπούλου και Στέλλα Στάμπολα) αναζητούν τον έρωτα με backdrop την Αθήνα στα καλύτερα της.
‘Να ‘χουμε το νου μας’
Για όσους θυμούνται το newsletter του Ιανουαρίου, στον Πειραιά το νέο έτος 2004 καλωσόρισε ο Βλάσσης Μπονάτσος αγκαλιά με το Σάκη Ρουβά.
‘Να κάνουμε καλούς Ολυμπιακούς και να ‘χουμε το νου μας’ συμβούλεψε τον ελληνικό λαό ο Βλάσσης τον Ιανουάριο, αλλά δυστυχώς έφυγε από τη ζωή στις 14 Οκτωβρίου.
Focus: το πρώτο ελληνικό skate video κυκλοφορεί
Ο Νοέμβριος του 2004 φέρνει μια μεγάλη στιγμή στην ιστορία του ελληνικού skateboarding, αφού κυκλοφορεί το FOCUS, το πρώτο ελληνικό skate video.
Μέχρι τότε στην Ελλάδα δεν είχε κυκλοφορήσει κάποιο επίσημο skate videotape, όπως σε άλλες χώρες του εξωτερικού.
Περιέχει κόλπα από τους πρωταγωνιστές της skate σκηνής του 2000, όπως τους Billy Gee, Θωμά Καλούση, Ορέστη Καραγιώργη, Γιάννη και Γιώτη Γόρδιο και πολλούς άλλους.
Παρότι πλέον δεν μπορείτε να το βρείτε σε ‘όλα τα καλά skate shops’, μπορείτε να το δείτε παρακάτω σε πολύ καλή 4K ανάλυση στο κανάλι του μοντέρ της ταινίας, Hippys.
Φεστιβάλ Νταλίκας
Από τις 8 έως τις 10 Οκτωβρίου, στην πίστα των Μεγάρων πραγματοποιήθηκε το 2ο Φεστιβάλ Νταλίκας και επαγγελματικού φορτηγού. Αυτό.
Ξεκινάει το beef των ZN με τους ΒηταΠεις
Στα τέλη του 2004 ξεκινάει ένα από τα πιο θρυλικά beefs στην ιστορία της ελληνικής hip hop σκηνής όταν οι νεοσύστατοι ΒήταΠεις κυκλοφορούν το τραγούδι ‘Αλήθεια Λέω’, κριτικάροντας την κατάσταση της σκηνής την εποχή εκείνη.
Ο Τάκι Τσαν και ο Χαρμάνης από τους ΖΝ εξέλαβαν το κομμάτι ως diss και απαντήσαν με το θρυλικό ‘Και Εμείς Αλήθεια Λέμε’.
Προς αποφυγήν παρεξηγήσεων, οι ΒήταΠεις εξέδωσαν ανακοίνωση στο hiphop.gr λέγοντας πως το θέμα δεν ήταν προσωπικό. Λίγα χρόνια αργότερα βέβαια, ο Άσαρκος από τους ΒήταΠεις αναφέρθηκε και πάλι στους ΖΝ στο κομμάτι "Μεταξύ Μας".
Μίκρο - 180°
Την 1η Δεκεμβρίου 2004 οι Θεσσαλονικείς electro-pop Μίκρο κυκλοφορούν τον τρίτο τους δίσκο με τίτλο “180°”. Μία αν μη τι άλλο καλή χρονιά για το (μέχρι σήμερα ενεργό) συγκρότημα που μέσα στην ίδια χρονιά ίδρυσε τη δική του δισκογραφική εταιρεία (Undo Records) και έπαιξε τρία live εκτός Ελλάδας σε Λονδίνο, Κόβεντρι και Λέστερ.
Λεωφορειοπειρατεία
Τα ξημερώματα της 15ης Δεκεμβρίου του 2004, ένα λεωφορείο ΚΤΕΛ που εκτελούσε το δρομολόγιο Μαραθώνας-Αθήνα ακινητοποιήθηκε στην λεωφόρο Μαραθώνος όταν δύο λεωφορειοπειρατές πυροβόλησαν με καραμπίνα.
Αξιοποιώντας την εκπαίδευση που έλαβαν ενόψει Ολυμπιακών αγώνων, αστυνομικοί εξήντλησαν την υπομονή των λεωφορειοπειρατών σε μια διαπραγμάτευση που κράτησε 19 ώρες, με τη βοήθεια και του οδηγού του λεωφορείου που κατάφερε να ξεφύγει παίρνοντας μαζί τα κλειδιά του οχήματος!
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η διαπραγματευτική ομάδα περιλάμβανε και τον Θανάση Κατερινόπουλο, σήμερα γνωστό από τις εμφανίσεις του στις εκπομπές της Αγγελικής Νικολούλη και του Πέτρου Κουσουλού.
Στα συναυλιακά
Μετά από ένα σχετικά ήσυχο συναυλιακό καλοκαίρι, το φθινόπωρο παίρνει φωτιά.
1/10 - οι Prodigy διαλύουν το Θέατρο Λυκαβηττού
21/10 - το experimental techno duo των Φινλανδών PanSonic εμφανίζεται στο Bios, σε μια συναυλία που αποτέλεσε σταθμό για την niche ηλεκτρονική σκηνή της Αθήνας
22-23/10 - οι θρύλοι του death metal, Obituary, εμφανίζονται σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη
20/11 - οι Franz Ferdinand με τον ελληνικής καταγωγής τραγουδιστή Alex Kapranos έρχονται στην Αθήνα στο απόλυτο prime τους για μια συναυλία στο Ρόδον
Τον Νοέμβριο και τον Δεκέμβριο έρχονται επίσης οι Tuxedomoon, Nikki Sudden, Azymuth, Tim Booth, Peter Hammill, Legendary Pink Dots, Arab Strap, Nick Cave, Julian Cope, Greg Dulli, Television Personalities και πολλοί άλλοι.
Και κάπως έτσι κλείνουμε αυτό το αφιερώμα στο ονειρικό 2004 (it was a blast) και η ζωή στην Ελλάδα συνεχίζεται με σταδιακά λιγότερο γκλάμουρ και ανεξέλεγκτα καθοδική πορεία.

Welcome to the last instalment of our newsletter series about the magical year 2004 - a year that marked Greece and is remembered as one of the most glamorous and optimistic years, but also as the start of the end for Greece’s golden days.
We started this newsletter series with the aim to rediscover what happened in 2004 in Greek society aside of the Olympics.

So let’s see how the year ended and what happened in the last three months of 2004 in Greece.
Cinema returns
Autumn tends to bring new series and movies, and the production of that season was quite considerable.
Several movies that are still being referenced today were screened at Thessaloniki Film Festival that took place between the 19th and the 28th of November, including the following:

Φτάσαμεε!.../We arrived!...(Stavros Tsiolis)
Hardcore (Dennis Iliadis)
Τεστοστερόνη/Testosterone (Yiorgos Panousopoulos)
Αληθινή Ζωή/Real Life (Panos Koutras)
Delivery (Nikos Panagiotopoulos)
‘Delivery’ and the downfall that was about to come
Nikos Panagiotopoulos’ ‘Delivery’ was possibly the most interesting of the movies mentioned above. The movie follows an unnamed young man, who without really having a plan, arrives to a decadent Athens on a public bus to become a delivery boy and experience the contrasts and the misery of the big city.
During the peak of the pre-Olympic golden advertising era of 2004, Panagiotopoulos deconstructs Athens and takes a peak at the uninviting parts of the city, the low-lit streets, the city centre ghettos, the drugs, the homeless, the migrants, with an almost prophetic lens for the future that was meant to come for the country and capturing images that would sadly become very common a few years later.

The Greek Sex and The City
On television, Nikos Perakis, already known for his popular movies ‘Loufa kai Parallagi’ and ‘BIOS + πολιτεία’, returns with the second season of “Σχεδόν Ποτέ/Almost Never” (essentially the Greek version of Sex and The City). Four young women (Natalia Migdou, Mary Akrivopoulou, Vicky Papadopoulou and Stella Stampola) are looking for love in an Athenian backdrop at its absolute best.
“To take care and be mindful”
For those who remember January's newsletter, popular actor and musician Vlassis Bonatsos rang in the new year in Piraeus alongside superstar Sakis Rouvas.
He addressed the public wishing everyone a good Olympic year and advising them to “take care and be mindful” (in a nod to potential terrorist attacks). Sadly he passed away later that year, on the 14th of October.
Focus: the first Greek skate video is released
November 2004 marked an important moment in the history of Greek skateboarding, with the release of the first Greek skate video called FOCUS.
Up to that point, there was no official skate videotape released in Greece as it had happened in other countries.
FOCUS contains tricks by the main players of the skate scene of the 2000s, such as Billy Gee, Thomas Kalousis, Orestis Karayiorgis, Yiannis and Yiotis Gordios and many more.
Although you can’t find the tape at ‘all the good skate shops in Greece’ anymore, you can watch it in high quality in Hippy’s (the guy who edited the video) channel (scroll above to the relevant Greek section and you will find a link to the video).
‘Dalika/Heavy Goods Vehicle’ Festival
Between the 8th and the 10th of October, a festival showcasing heavy good vehicles (commonly called “dalikes” in Greek) took place in Megara. This sums it up really.
The start of a beef between ZN and ΒηταΠεις
Towards the end of 2004 we see the start of one of the most legendary Greek hip-hop beefs, when newly established ΒήταΠεις released their song “Αλήθεια Λέω/(I’m Telling The Truth)”, critiquing the state of the Greek hip-hop scene at the time.
Taki Tsan and Harmanis of ZN understood the song to be a diss towards them and responded with the epic ‘Και Εμείς Αλήθεια Λέμε/(We Are Also Telling The Truth)’.
To avoid confusion, ΒήταΠεις later released a statement on hiphop.gr, saying that the song was not meant to be a personal attack. However, a few years later, Asarkos from ΒήταΠεις referred to ZN again in a song titled "Μεταξύ Μας (Between Us)".
Mikro - 180°
On the 1st of December 2004, electro-pop band Mikro release their third album titled “180°”. 2004 was admittedly a good year for the band from Thessaloniki (who are still active today), as they released this album, they set up their own record label (Undo Records) and played three shows outside of Greece in London, Coventry and Leicester.
Bus hijacking
In the early hours of the 15th of December 2004, a public bus that was headed towards Athens from Marathonas was hijacked by two armed men.
The Greek police though who had freshened up their training ahead of the Olympics managed to negotiate with the hijackers for so long (19 hours) that they exhausted them and successfully resolved the incident without victims. They were also helped by the bus’ driver who managed to escape and take the vehicle’s keys with him!
It is worth noting that Thanasis Katerinopoulos, who is now known for his contributions to Greek investigative shows, was a part of the negotiating team.
Gigs
Following a relatively quiet summer when it comes to gigs, autumn/winter shows were fire.
1/10 - Prodigy pretty much destroy the Lycabettus theatre
21/10 - Finnish experimental techno duo PanSonic performs at Bios, a show that left a mark on the Athenian niche electronic scene
22-23/10 - death metal legends Obituary perform in Athens and Thessaloniki
20/11 - Franz Ferdinand in their absolute prime came to Greece so Alex Kapranos could retrace his Greek roots with a show at Rodon
In November and December we also see performances by Tuxedomoon, Nikki Sudden, Azymuth, Tim Booth, Peter Hammill, Legendary Pink Dots, Arab Strap, Nick Cave, Julian Cope, Greg Dulli, Television Personalities and many more.
And just like that, we wrap up this newsletter series and our travel back in time to the glorious Greek year of 2004 (it was a blast) - from there life in Greece goes on in a much less glamorous manner and at a steady declining pace.
