Τι συνέβη λοιπόν το Φεβρουάριο του 2004;

ENG
It’s the 29th of February 2004 (since it’s a leap year, like the current one), and Greece is, slowly but surely, moving towards moments of glory. Like most Februarys, no major stuff is happening, but work is being carried out in the background.
Attiki Odos (the main motorway system around the city of Athens) is in progress, the construction of the Calatrava roof that’s meant to decorate the Olympic Stadium for the Olympics is moving so slowly that a plan b is being drafted in case the roof is not delivered in time for the Games, and we are officially counting down to a series of planned and unplanned thrills.
What exactly happened in February 2004 though?
A new era for PASOK
In last month’s newsletter about January 2004, we left off where Costas Simitis, after two terms at the helm of the country and with signs of fatigue and doubt from his own party, was stepping down from his position as PASOK leader.
A party leadership contest took place on the 8th of February 2004, with George Papandreou being the only candidate in the running, after having secured Simitis’ unofficial blessing and being the natural successor to lead a party his father founded. It is estimated that 1.020.145 members and friends of the party voted in the leadership contest (a participation record across any party elections in Greece) and Papandreou gathered 99,70% of the vote.
While PASOK was changing hands, at the opposite camp the leader of the opposition, Kostas Karamanlis - who had been feeling ready to lead the country for a while, especially after his marginal loss in the 2000 general election, when Greece went to bed thinking they had elected a Nea Dimokratia government and woke up with a PASOK government - was preparing to become Prime Minister with a plan to “re-establish the state”.
And just like that, the two big political dynasties of Greece were ready to go to battle in a general election that would take place one month later, on the 7th of March 2004 (stay tuned for more).
Snow all over Greece
On the 12th of February 2004, the evening of Tsiknopempti, the public had been warned about potential snowfall, but - as one would expect of the Greeks - they still went out en masse to eat and celebrate. And while restaurants, tavernas and similar establishments were getting busy, snow was starting to come down strong.
Gradually the intense weather conditions spread out across the country and around 9pm, snow started falling in Athens. A little drizzle turned into a full-blown snow blast, which continued throughout the night and resulted in pretty much the whole country waking up to blankets of snow - and as it happens with various (not necessarily weather-related) incidents in Greece, everything got paralysed for days.
Nitro celebrates its 100th issue
If in the ‘90s KLIK magazine built the foundations for the introduction of lifestyle culture in Greece by unapologetically promoting sexual (and often sexist) content, glamorous nightlife, random minor celebrities, new money, selfishness and poor taste, Kostopoulos’ Nitro was a turbo-charged version of that in the ‘00s.
In February 2004, the magazine celebrated its 100th issue with model Aleka Kamila on the cover and a very eclectic selection of featured articles, including “How difficult is it to be Christoforos Papakaliatis”, “A mission to Americans’ Baghdad” and “Fat ladies: they eat and spread out”…
“And now we’ll tear your Gucci dress apart”
Around the middle of February, “Jacuzzi”, a song by then unknown hip-hop group Voreia Kiklomata, started trending in Greece’s Top 20 chart.
“Jacuzzi” was a diss track in response to Yiorgos Mazonakis’ mega-hit “The Gucci Dress”. Voreia Kiklomata were unhappy with the positive reaction Mazo had received for criticising the affluent lifestyle prevalent in Athens’ northern suburbs, so they decided to return the favour with an enjoyable ode to money, luxury and Ferraris.
Porsche Club’s first election
We are in the depths of winter of 2004 in Greece, the vibe is rich and optimistic, so it’s admittedly a fitting time for Greek owners of Porsche cars to come together to elect the first president on the newly established “Porsche Club”.
Despite three previous failed attempts, the instigators of the club were so invested in this initiative that they spent considerable time between 2003 and 2004 to promote the club by placing ads in the press and also by handing out leaflets to Porsche owners, with the aim to mobilise as many owners as possible and start an official club. Their latest attempt was successful, the club became official and the first election was held on 15 February 2004.
Shortly after, the club organised a (relatable) “grand opening” event at Village Park “with the aim to present the club to the general public”. And if there was a good time in Greece for the general public to believe that they could also own a Porsche, it was 2004 - sky was indeed the limit at the time.
In culture
On television at the time you can mostly watch “Savvatogennimenes”, “To Kafe tis Haras” and some show by Christopher Papakaliatis - basically the same stuff still being shown on tv right now.
Painter Michalis Papadopoulos presents a series of paintings at Titanium-Yiayiannos Gallery.
Greek rappers Taki Tsan and Harmanis are recording their album “The School/To Σχολείο”. You can see some photos from their recording sessions here.
On 12 February 2004, Theo Aggelopoulos’ film “The Weeping Meadow” is premiering in Berlin, Thessaloniki and Athens at the same time.
A recommendation for February 2004
